10 for 2011 – #9. FIXERS

23 Jan

Fixers are a group from Oxford and the best description I’ve read of them is ‘Animal Collective playing MGMT’ – so in other words they combine big hooks with psychedelic soundscapes and then layer them with strange but beautiful harmonies. The British Animal Collective they are certainly not but there is a distinctly American West Coast slant to their music which is wistfully sunny and nostalgic.

Other obvious reference points are Fleet Foxes and The Beach Boys but, as I say, those are a bit too obvious as influences and Fixers apparently have more exotic and unusual tastes. Their first single, ‘Amsterdam’ was influenced by Japanese pop and it’s slow and sonically dense whilst ‘Iron Deer Dream’ is more chaotic and immediate.

It’s difficult to assess whether Fixers have what it takes to succeed in 2011, afterall they haven’t even released a proper single, but I would say it’s more than likely we will hear exciting things from their camp in the coming year.
